Inspired by the London Marathon, the 26 miles project asked 27 writers to team up with a visual artist and walk one specific mile of the Marathon course (the 27th of course, having to walk only 350 or so yards…). The brief was to create a piece in response to what we saw, with each piece being launched on the 26 miles website day by day in the run-up to the 2013 marathon.
I was delighted to get mile 0-1, when I realised its enormous historical significance.
I began my mile with the talented photographer John Bryson, also the first creative director I ever worked with back in the days when I was a very lowly account handler. Half-way through the project, John was taken ill and spent some weeks in hospital, so the inestimable Mark Noad stepped in and completed John’s creative vision.
